The British had occupied most of India, but the Indus region was still not a part of their territory. The people inhabiting the coasts of the Indus, River had heard about the oppression the British would inflict on the lands they occupied, especially the heavy taxes imposed on farmers. Now, an Englishman dressed in a white suit and hat, wandering around their homes, was making them suspicious. They spotted him frequently around the river, atteinpting to engage people in conversation and occasionally offering treatment for their ailments with the few medicines he carried.
